U.S. Department of Energy

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)

The Greater Long Island Clean Cities Coalition has been awarded $14,994,183 million dollars for their application entitled, Long Island Regional Energy Collaborative "Promoting a Green Economy through Clean Alternatives". The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) on behalf of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is responsible for processing this award.

 Below is the list of GLICCC's sub-awardees and their project status:

 V. Garofalo Carting Inc.

V. Garofalo Carting Inc. a small family owned residential refuse collection service that has served the East Long Island market for over 50 years, and they have received $600,000 for the purchase of ten heavy-duty compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks.

Project Status - Five refuse trucks have been received and are in service.

 

Engineered Energy Solutions (EES)

 Engineered Energy Solutions (EES) has received $1,231,500 for the installation of a new, publicly accessible CNG fuel station for the Middle Country School District to be placed on school property. The main goal of this project is to provide immediate CNG refueling access to fifteen CNG school buses owned and operated by the Middle Country School District and to allow the District to transition their current fleet to 70 CNG school buses.

Project Statue - All ground testing have been done, now in develop stage.

 

Village of East Rockaway

As part of late Mayor Edward T. Sideban's "Green Village Initiative," the Village of East Rockaway is determined to replace their fleet of six diesel fueled trash collection trucks with CNG refuse haulers.  The Village of East Rockaway will first eliminate the two oldest and highest polluting diesel trucks in their fleet followed by a plan to replace the remaining four trucks over the next two years. The Village has been awarded $137,310 to help fund the purchase of the aforementioned two CNG trucks.

Project Status - One CNG refuse truck received and in service.

 

Town of Huntington

The Town of Huntington has received ARRA funding through the Department of Energy for the purchase of two compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, and the conversion of two existing diesel garbage trucks to CNG.  The Town of Huntington has been awarded $260,000.

Project Status - One CNG refuse truck received and in service.

 

Town of Hempstead

The Town of Hempstead has been awarded $426,000 to help fund the purchase of seven compressed natural gas (CNG) heavy duty refuse trucks and two (CNG) pickup trucks to add to the municipal fleet.  The Town of Hempstead has identified the make and model of each vehicle to be purchased.

Project Status - In bidding stage for vehicles.

 

National Grid

National Grid has been awarded $87,696.00 to help fund nine (CNG) vans that will increase the company's use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and to add to the already CNG heavy fleet. In addition, National Grid plans to purchase CNG vehicles only going forward.

Project Status - All nine vans have been purchase and are in the process of up-fitting.

 

Town of Oyster Bay

The Town of Oyster Bay plans to design, construct and operate a natural gas fueling station that will be used by municipal fleets owned and operated by the Town of Oyster Bay.  The Town of Oyster Bay has been awarded $5,023,529 which will support a CNG fueling station, and the upfit to 44 natural gas trucks, and modify garages in order to accommodate the new fleet. The station will be located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset, New York.

Project Status - In bidding process for vehicles and engineer to build station.

 

Nassau County

Nassau County's Department of Public Works is committed to expanding their already impressive alternative fuels fleet in addition to building a CNG fueling station to meet the growing demand for this alternative fuel in the region. Nassau County has been awarded $3,562,501 to purchase 35 dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG) dump trucks over the course of two years and to build a CNG fueling station.  Nassau County owns the property where the CNG fueling station will be located.

Project Status - Preparing RFP for engineer to build station and bidding for vehicles.

 

Suffolk County

Suffolk County's Department of Public Works is installing two compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations, purchase three heavy duty CNG trucks as well as modify vehicle maintenance facilities and provide CNG training to mechanics and end-users.  The CNG fueling station would be accessible by the public and located at a current gasoline and diesel dispensing facility in the county.  The County has been awarded $2,129,000.00 in ARRA funding.

Project Status - Preparing RFP for engineer to build stations and bidding on vehicles.





 

Round 8 Funding

Through Round 8 Funding, awarded in January of 2009, GLICCC is currently contributing to the following projects:

  • Town of Smithtown: Two heavy-duty dump trucks re-powering to dedicated CNG
  • Nassau County: Five heavy-duty dump trucks re-powering to dedicated CNG.
  • Town of Oyster Bay: Five refuse trucks re-powering to dedicated CNG.
  • Long Beach Public School District: Eight school buses dedicated to CNG.
  • Maggio Sanitation Services, Inc: Four refuse trucks dedicated to CNG.
